In 2014 Nathan Haines gathered together regular collaborators Mike Patto, Vanessa Freeman and 4 Hero’s Marc Mac and recorded a limited edition album called ‘5 A Day’. Fast-forward four years and the New Zealand born saxophonist offers us the results of a reworked/re-recorded project using the same team to deliver the same tracks but with an updated slant. The West-London vibe is firmly in evidence on the title track ‘Zoot Allure’ (Zoot being the name of his young son), the infectious boogie of ‘You Got Me Thinking’ is an instant classic while the more laid back ‘5 A Day’ has that lazy, deep groove that brings to mind Roy Ayers at his most slinky. ‘Madmazelle Midnight’ is another mid tempo headnodder that has some superb washes of sound that creates a cosmic feel, ‘Mastermind’ is a superb, uplifting slab of nu-jazz with a spiritual edge while Bugz In The Attic and Opolopo both contribute versions of ‘Got Me Thinking’ that are primed for the dancefloor. Faultless stuff from this talent. We wish Nathan all the best with his recovery from his illness earlier in 2018.
