Kool And The Gang – Kool And The Gang | Album of the day 13th January 2021

The 1970 debut album from Kool and the Gang scored a couple of hits with 'The Gangs Back Again' and the title cut, but more importantly, it heralded the arrival of what was to become a juggernaut on the R&B scene. This all-instrumental record is years away from the commercial successes of 'Jungle Boogie' and 'Celebration,' and a few light years away stylistically, too. But that unique mixture of jazz, funk, and R&B punctuated by those tremendous horn arrangements (and some great drum breaks) that characterizes Kool and the Gang at its best is here in full force. Tracks like...

Outta sight return with another selection of new and vintage ‘modern soul’ sounds and as ever the quality is strong. Originally a CD only release from 2004, sixteen years later this now highly sought after album is finally available on a double purple vinyl release in very limited quantities (200 copies) The pulsating 80s throwback dancer ‘Keep On Going’ kicks things off in retro style while the slower tempo of ‘Say the Same’ has a late 90s feel. The soulful R&B ‘Cheatin’ On Me’ takes us back to the early Y2k UK scene, the funky edged Bernard Wright penned stepper ‘Destiny’ offers yet more shade while the mid tempo modern ‘I Can Tell’ is another highlight. Kamasi Washington – Becoming | Album Of the day 9th December 2020

Kamasi Washington composed and produced the original score for ‘Becoming’, the four time Emmy-nominated film that provided an intimate glimpse into the life of Michelle Obama, and the sound is Kamasi at his most soulful. There’s a real vintage feel to the melodies here and the whole project is handled with a delicate austerity that reflects the former first lady’s demeanour. None of the tracks (with the exception of the 4:23 min long ‘I Am Becoming’) is over 3 mins long, with many being brief but evocative snapshots that truly give this set the feeling of a film score. The stunning...

Lee Fields – Big Crown Vaults Vol 1 | Album of the day 2nd December 2020

Lee Fields' 'Big Crown Vaults Vol 1' collects unreleased songs from the Special Night & It Rains Love sessions that didn’t make their way to albums, and this set launches a new series entitled Big Crown Vaults that will surely see a slew of future releases. The quality of the cuts here make the set sound like a complete studio album in its own right: the menacing funk 'Do You Know', the cavernous ballad 'Time' and the stunning dancer 'Thinking About You' blend seamlessly with crashing beat ballads like 'Two Timer' and the gospel tinged deep soul of 'Don't Give...
