Bob James’ debut for the CTi label in 1974 ‘Bob James One’ is an absolute masterpiece. James’ tinkling keyboards resonate through the album but he is accompanied by a stellar cast of musicians and an orchestra. Grover Washington, Steve Gadd, Gary King, Jon Faddis, Marvin Stamm and Ralph McDonald are amongst the many musicians involved. The arrangements by James are dramatic and spectacular throughout but especially on the much sampled ‘Nautilus’ which has a driving rhythm topped by James keys. ‘Valley Of The Shadows’ and ‘Night On Bald Mountain’ are Neo classical Jazz featuring incredible arrangements engineered magnificently by RVG , there is a lot going on but it’s all crystal clear. There is a great cover of ‘Feel Like Making Love’ and the mystical ‘Solero’ ft Grover on Soprano. Great to have this superb album back available again.
