Album Of The Day | Roy Ayers Ubiquity – Vibrations

Roy Ayers recorded his superb ‘Vibrations’ album with his band Ubiquity in 1976. It is a strong album throughout but includes many classic mid tempo grooves. ‘Searching’ is especially strong, almost definitive of its style, a soulful jazz-funk floater with great instrumentation from Roy and the band. ‘The Memory’ is another classic mid tempo featuring Edwin Birdsong on string ensemble and dueting vocally with Roy. Chicas powerful but sweet voice graces ‘Baby I need Your love’ a lovely shuffling hypnotic mid tempo groove, she also adds ethereal backing vocals to the beautiful primarily instrumental title track ‘Vibrations’. ‘Baby You Give Me A Feeling’ is another really nice mid tempo vocal track.There are also some nice upper tempo tracks like the typically Ayers off beat groover ‘One Sweet Love To Remember’ on which Chicas really lets rip with her powerful voice. ‘Moving and Grooving’  , ‘Come out And Play’ and ‘Domelo (Give It To Me)’  are also good uptempo numbers.  Vibrations is a really strong mid 70’s Roy Ayers album featuring some great musicians including Phillip Woo, William Allen, Justo Almario, Bernard Purdie and others plus the main vibes man himself.
