Ledisi – Wild Card | Album of the day 10th November 2020

Twenty years after announcing her arrival with the classic debut Soulsinger, Ledisi returns with her 9th studio album and first for three years following 2017’s ‘Let Love Rule’ set. Co-produced with Rex Rideout this album kicks off with the laid back, bluesy ‘Anything For You’ – what strikes you immediately is how strong and nuanced Ledisi’s voice is, matured by time and possessing a gravitas that comes with experience – followed by the deep, southern vibes of ‘Next Time’. The sublime, slow ballad ‘Same Love’ is a joy, her jazz side reveals itself in the Phyllis/Anita vibes of ‘Now Or Never’ while the rich Memphis feel of ‘Stay Gone’ has a southern richness driven by the warm production. ‘Where I Am’ brings us back to that early 2000s Ledisi Organic Soul groove, ‘WKND’ throws is back to an 80s boogie swagger on the album’s most uptempo dancer, Cory Henry guests on the punchy ‘What Kinda Love Is That’, the prescient ‘One’ builds with a restrained gospel vibe, the soul-jazz of ‘Wake Up’ featuring Sa-Roc again harks back to the heydays of the early millennium while the powerful ‘Stone’ carries a strong message of resilience. Really strong album and a welcome return.
