Lonnie Liston Smith – Cosmic Funk & Astral Travelling – Album Of The Day

Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes – Cosmic Funk

Lonnie Liston Smith’s second album ‘Cosmic Funk’ was released in 1974 on the Flying Dutchman label. The title track is a spacey funky jazz number reminiscent of Miles Davis ‘On the Corner’. ‘Footprints’ is a brilliant percussive version of the Wayne Shorter track featuring Lonnie’s textured keyboards, George Barron on Soprano Sax, propelled by Al Anderson’s bass. ‘Beautiful Woman’ is a beautiful track featuring Donald Smith harmonic vocals. ‘Sais (Egypt)’is a lovely atmospheric Spiritual Jazz track written by Mtume. Donald Smith appears again on the slower and reflective ‘Peaceful Ones and ‘Naima’. ‘Cosmic Funk is a strong album that bridges the gap between Lonnie’s Spiritual Jazz past and his more well known sound that started with his next album ‘Expansions’.

Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes – Astral Travelling

Lonnie Liston Smith’s debut album for Flying Dutchman from 1973 reveals the talent that was to become one of the biggest Jazz artists of the 70’s. ‘Astral Travelling’ is a beautiful mid tempo track underpinned by Cecil McBee’s bass lines and David Lee on drums allowing Lonnie’s keyboards and George Barron’s sax to float above them. ‘Revelation’ is another great track with a strong melody and Lonnie’s characterstic keyboard textures. ‘Let us go into the house of the Lord’ and ‘I Mani (faith)’ are more spiritual. Deep album.
