Donny Hathaway made this his second album in 1971, it followed his sensational highly acclaimed debut 'Everything Is Everthing'. The album is superbly produced by Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin and features nine songs that really focus on Donny's so soulful voice and his keyboard playing. The tight rhythm section features Donny along with Chuck Rainey bass Cornell Dupree guitar and Al Jackson drums and percussion. 'Giving Up' is an amazing soulful piece of music, full of emotion and immaculate performances topped by King Curtis sax solo. Donny's versions of Leon Russell 'A Song For You' , Billy Preston 'Little...

Rest in Peace Roy Ayers ️ Roy Ayers has left us all with many memories and an incredible catalogue of recorded music and productions that we have enjoyed over the past 50 years + and will continue to do so for many more. For me he was one of the pioneers of the Jazz-Funk genre, from the very early 70s and forward. I bought into Roy around the time of his ‘Mystic Voyage’ album (I remember Dave Godin recommending it in his Blues & Soul column) and every album after that until the mid 80s, then discovering his earlier Polydor...

Firstly we are very sad to learn of the passing of many great Soul and Jazz artists in the past couple of weeks. Gwen McCrae made many great albums and singles and possessed an incredibly powerful voice and will be remembered for crucial tracks like '90% Of me Is You' and 'Keep The Fire Burning' . Angie Stone was one of the queens of Neo Soul and gave us some great albums and will be best remembered for 'Wish i Didn't Miss You' . Randy Brown made some great albums in the late 70s especially 'Midnight Desire' and his modern soul classic 45...
Joe Henderson recorded ‘Multiple’ in 1973 for the Milestone label, one of a string of great albums he made for the label. Right from the opening notes of the 10 minute opener ‘Tress-Cun-Deo-La’ you know this is going to be special. The band lay down an incredibly intense funky groove over which Henderson blows hard using Tenor and Soprano saxes, flutes plus percussion and voices to create a very full sound that you can really immerse yourself in. Larry Willis on electric piano, Jack DeJonette on drums, Dave Holland on bass and James ‘Blood’ Ulmer on guitar are really going...
