Album Of The Day | Malcolm Strachan – Look On The Bright Side

Haggis Horns Trumpeter Malcolm Strachan has produced another really strong album featuring 7 new jazz grooves 'Look On The Bright Side'. 'Leave it All behind'  is a lovely breezy upper tempo track. 'Latin Soul Shaker' is what you might expect from the title that has a 60s British Jazz vibe and a latin/soul vybe, one for the jazz dancers. 'The Eclipse' has a more complex almost Afro rhythm, Malcolm's flugelhorn to the fore, and a nice solo from saxophonist Athell Ransome. 'Quest For Love' is another upbeat track featuring incidental female vocals from Tanje Daese, who also vocalises on 'Let Love Lead...

Those songs have stood the test if time and are still very relevant today. Brian has now re-recorded 19 tracks featuring some great musicians and guest singers, keeping the spirit of the songs but updating the grooves to sound more contemporary on 'Now More Than Ever'. Miles 100

We celebrate the centenary of the birth of Miles Davis, unquestionably the most important figure in the history of Jazz music. Miles started playing with Charlie Parker in 1944, and he enjoyed a 50+ year career as a leader from the Birth Of The Cool sessions in 1949 until his death aged 65 in 1991. The key to his longevity was constantly embracing change, having started in the be-bop era, being at the forefront of Hard Bop in the 50's then cool Jazz, with the modal jazz 'Kind Of Blue' in 1959, recording amazing albums with two quartets for a...

Album Of The Day | Roy Hargrove – Bern

Trumpetter Roy Hargrove recorded this album live at the Bern jazz festival in 2000, which has remained unreleased until now. Roy is joined by some serious musicians including Larry Willis in keyboards and Willie Jones III on drums on this fantastic set almost an hour of incredible Jazz music. 'Circus' and 'Stranded' are full on heavyweight shifters featuring great solos but this album is great throughout. The sound quality is also very good for a live album. Essential
