New Releases, Reissues and Restocks | Friday 5th July

This week at the top of the list for new releases is Aaron Frazer's 'Into The Blue'. A brilliant new album and a must have for fans of that retro soul sound of Durand Jones, The Monophonics et al. Reissue wise there's two new tone poets from Wayne Shorter and Donald Byrd, Shorter's 'Odyssey Of Iksa' from 1970 is definitely worth having for fans of his more explorative work and Byrd's 'Byrd Blows on Beacon Hill' is a lovely quartet album from 1956. Elsewhere there is a rare funk gem from "Round Robin Monopoly,' a nice latin album from 'Roberto...

Album Of The Day | Nighttime Lovers 35

The popular Nighttime Lovers series clocks up 35 volumes with one of their best compilations in recent times. Shabazz's 'Glad You're In My Life', Enchantment's 'Give It Away' and Greg Henderson's classic 'Dreamin' are great boogie tunes. Josie James' 'Its Now Or Never', Jaisun's 'Keep It To Myself' and Ira Watson's floating 'Breaking Away' show a more soulful approach. There are obscure tracks like Cottonmouth's ' Treat You Kindly', Valarie Horton-Brown's 'It Must Be Love', and the fabulous O.T.Sykes' 'Stone Crush On You' amongst the 14 tracks celebrating 1980's Soul.

Album Of The Day | Spiritual Jazz 16 – Riverside

Spiritual Jazz 16 is a focus on Riverside and its associated sister labels. Riverside itself was founded in 1953 by Orrin Keepnews and Bill Grauer, and became an important purveyor in that decade and beyond of what would be marketed as of modern jazz. That coinage was itself an amorphous, umbrella term that essentially created a demarcation from the vocabulary of pre-war classic jazz and inter-war big band swing, thus recognizing that improvising artists were breaking new creative ground that would subsequently give rise to a flurry of sub-genres, for example bebop, hard bop, cool, modal and Latin jazz. And it's...
