Sam Dees – The Show Must Go On | Album of the day 4th June 2020

This classic album from 1974 is the only album that singer songwriter Sam Dees recorded in the 70’s. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in December 1945 to a large family, Sam formed his first group – The Bossanovians – before he was aged 10. Something of a musical prodigy, he was writing poetry and songs at an age when most of his friends were out playing. Often described as a prolific songwriter and occasional performer, Sam has written nearly four-hundred songs but in a career stretching over 50 years incredibly he’s released only three albums! The Social commentary tracks ‘Child of The Streets’ and it’s companion piece ‘Troubled Child’ are incisive observations of a sense of hopelessness that many felt growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, ‘Whats It Gonna Be’ has an upbeat tempo but again, the mournful strings underpinning the backing give it a clouded, bittersweet feel while the impassioned ‘The Show Must Go On’ again caries a heavy weight of feeling. ‘Worn Out Broken Heart’, ‘Just Out Of My Reach’ and ‘So Tied’ are great ballads, whilst the emphatic ‘Come Back Strong’ is a modern soul classic that still fills the floor while ‘Good Guys’ is also a good dancer. Brilliant album!
