The Electrified AGB – (All Girls Band) – Fly Away (Dome Records) – RSD 22′ Release | Single Of The Day

The Electrified AGB – All Girls Band Fly Away is an extremely sought after and rare private press Jazz-Funk outing written and recorded sometime during the 1970’s—the date is still unclear. Produced by Lloyd L Harris Jr and featuring a cast of obscure female musicians and performers from the New Orleans area, the original copy of this obscure Louisiana Jazz-Funk single commands ridiculously high prices online where a copy is currently listed on Discogs for just under £2,000. Having been recently reissued for Record Store Day, it has been doing the rounds on Soul and Jazz circles, receiving attention from selectors such as Gilles Peterson who promoted it in his top RSD 22’ picks over the weekend, among other high calibre collectors and dealers in the know.

The single is comprised of both instrumental and vocal versions of the track Fly Away, an upbeat stepper comprised of Donna Mitchell on trumpet and lead vocals, Carol Davis on drums and lead vocals, Brenda Andrews on saxes and background vocals, Tina Dupree on flute and congas, Sharon Simpson on keyboards, Claire Banks on Guitar and Glenda Chambliss on bass. The tracks rides on a groove centred around and light and airy Clavinet and Rhodes riff, funky basslines and shuffling drumlines bustling all the way throughout overlaid by shimmering horns, talking congas and wacky electronics, almost sounding like a confluence of a Taste of Honey, Patrice Rushen and Seawind. Certainly an esoteric and little known title that will undoubtedly multiply in price over the next few years.
