This Is Flying Dutchman (Compilation, LP & CD) | Album Of The Day

To coincide with the relaunch of Bob Thiele’s Flying Dutchman label Dean Rudland has compiled for BGP ‘This Is Flying Dutchman 1969-75. It contains 16 tracks from this epic label, featuring not only its main stars Gil Scott Heron, Lonnie Liston Smith and Leon Thomas but many lesser known artists. Gil Scott Heron ‘Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ and ‘Whitey On The Moon’ perfectly illustrate his spoken word style. Leon Thomas ‘Just in Time To See the Sun’ is a fantastic uptempo Funky Jazz stormer, whilst ‘Echoes’ is a beautiful mid tempo track. Cesar ‘See Saw Affair’ is a vocal Latin flavoured dancer, Harold Alexander ‘Mama Soul’ has a Jeremy Steig style flute led groove, and Gato Barbieri ‘Bolivia’ has a really nice feel, topped with his distinctive sax playing. Ornette Coleman couldn’t have made many funkier tracks than ‘ Friends and Neighbors’ , and Pretty Purdie keeps the funk going on ‘Heavy Soul Slinger’, whilst Esther Marrow adds some soul with ‘Peaceful Man’. The compilation includes the track that is most associated with the label : Lonnie Liston Smith’s Jazz-Funk classic ‘Expansions’. Nice compilation with some lesser known tracks from the Flying Dutchman label which complements the Flying Dutchman Anthology we issued many years ago.
