Herbie Hancock’s ‘Mwandishi’ (1971) represents a departure from his modal/ Post-Bop Blue Note recordings. It shows the influence of Miles Davis (‘In A Silent Way’/ ‘Bitches Brew’). The band that features Eddie Henderson and Bennie Maupin excel on grooves like the unusual time signature on ‘Ostinato’. With its intense percussive sound, it is one heavy duty piece. ‘You’ll Know When You Get There’ is mellow before a return to the avant-garde experimentation of ‘Wandering Spirit Song’ that lives up to its title.
