After almost twenty years New Mastersounds are more like old masters of funk and guitar based jazz grooves and ‘Renewable Energy’ sees the band back with that Blue Note meets the Meters sound that they could easily play in their sleep. ‘Chicago Girl’ has that trademark chugging organ, horns and plucked guitar sound that they do so well, the pacey ‘Just Be Me’ features Andryon de Leon on vocals while ‘Green Was Beautiful’ is a nod to the man Grant. ‘Yokacoka’ sees the group tipping a wink to Lonnie’s ‘Expansions’ on a slick, 4/4 jazz funker while ‘Living That Jazz Life’ is exactly that – a cool mod-jazz groover. Check out the funky, easy flowing ‘Hip City’ with it’s late 70s NYC fusion keys and tight drums for another highlight.
