This previously impossible to find slice of 1980 West African funky disco was the second album that sax player Tunde Mabade released, with both of his albums being highly desired collector’s pieces. The African feel is evident throughout with the uptempo opener ‘Alobosi’ bubbling along apace with touches of William Onyeabor in effect, the slower jam of ‘Disco Funk Press’ again features that swirling rhythm with the sax more prominent and a chanted refrain interjecting at points while ‘Amupara Ko Mara Dara’ pick up the tempo again with a hypnotic groove and lots of spoken word which no doubt translates as a call to the floor. The pulsating afro-disco of ‘Angelina – Sugar Daddy’ has the kitchen sink thrown in while the title track ‘Viva Disco’ is the most afro-funk sounding track of them all despite its name: a brooding groove set just above mid tempo with the breathy sax taking centre stage. Great album that would remain otherwise lost in the midst of time.
