Gloria Scott recorded a classic and in demand album produced by Barry White in 1974. Nearly 50 years on she has made a follow-up album 'So Wonderful', recorded in the UK featuring some great musicians including Snowboy, Gary Crokett and Andrew McGuiness . The string backed mid tempo groover 'All Of The Time, You're On My Mind' co-written by Frank Wilson's brother Vance has all the hallmarks of her earlier work and was likely written for her First album. Barry White, H.B. Barnum and Gene Page wrote the ballad 'I've Got To Have All Of You', and more uptempo 'There's...
Camilla George – Ibio Ibio | LP, Coloured LP & CD (K7) Camilla George makes a stunning return with her third album on K7 records Ibio-Ibio, a rich, cultural journey dedicated to her Ibibio tribe of south-eastern coastal Nigeria from which the saxophonist and bandleader traces her ancestral roots. The album is a heady mix of afrobeat, hip hop and jazz co-produced by Camilla George, one of the finest offerings of the new London Jazz sound in recent years, a deep, penetrating listen that undulates with groove and impresses with masterful playing, deep harmonic workouts and synergetic performances from the...
Miche – With Love Volume 001 (Mr Bongo) Former Spiritland music programmer and in-demand DJ Miche (Michael Davies) is deejaying more than anything else these days, while fulfilling his licensing commitments with a handful of independent record labels. His sets and musical output errs towards Soul and Modern Soul, while also unearthing Brazilian, Jazz-Funk, Gospel and AOR album grooves, even flirting with Jazz-Fusion at his most recent event, Tudo Joia, at the Social in Marylebone—hosted alongside veteran musos Gary Johnson, Mark G V Taylor and Patrick Forge. His most recent compilation, With Love Volume 001, explores Davies’ musical tastes, delving into recent...
PHAROAH SANDERS RIP – GENTLE GENIUS, SAXOPHONIST EXTRAORDINAIRE Epitaphs such as ‘legend’, ‘unique’ and ‘genius’ are banded about in the music industry way too often but are understatements if not totally inadequate in respect of tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. As his music bears ample testament. Soul Brother Records are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Pharoah Sanders on Saturday 24th September; he was 81. Pharoah was born Ferrell Sanders on 13th October 1940 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He began his musical career in church on clarinet, but switched to tenor saxophone when he was at Scipio Jones High...

Blue Mitchell’s self titled 1971 album on Bob Shad’s Mainstream Records—often referred to as Soul Village—sees a reissue on Newland Records, a 180g package remastered by man in-demand Kevin Gray and pressed at the Pallas in Germany. The album features a tight core unit, comprised of Blue on trumpet, Walter Bishop Jr. on keys, Jimmy Forrest on tenor, Larry Gales on bass and Doug Sides on drums. The date was recorded in one take, telling of the quality of the musicians at Mitchell’s disposal, a short-lived quintet that lasted less than a year brought together after Blue’s move to Los...

It was with great sadness that we at Soul Brothers learned of the passing of Jazz pianist, Ramsey Lewis. He was 87. Born in Chicago, Lewis learned to play the piano from the age of four. After playing with various groups in and around his home city, he formed his own trio with bassist Eldee Young and drummer Isaac ‘Red’ Holt. In 1956, the trio recorded its debut album, ‘Ramsey Lewis and His Gentle-Men Of Swing’ for Argo Records, the Jazz subsidiary of the legendary Chicago based label, Chess. Lewis would go on to record over thirty albums on Argo...
Lindsey Webster returns with another strong album. Her music bridges Soul and Jazz very effectively. Lindsey's beautiful voice is accompanied by some great musicians throughout, including long term associate Keith Slater on keyboards and T.O.P. percussionist Lenny Castro. The uptempo 'I Didn't Mean It' really swings along and unusually features Brian Culbertson on trumpet and trombone. 'Love Of Your Life' is a mid tempo song ft Nathan East on bass and vocals. 'Wish You Well' is a nice horn backed mid tempo. 'I'm OK' is a good mid tempo stepper ft Nicholas Payton on Trumpet. There are two versions of...
