ART BLAKEY - WITCH DOCTOR Recorded in 1961, but not released until 1967, The Witch Doctor features one of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers’ all-time great line-ups: Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. Shorter and Morgan each contribute two tunes, with Timmons penning one. Highlights include Morgan’s spectacular 6/8 modal piece “Afrique” and Shorter’s minor masterpiece “Those Who Sit And Wait.” Bobby Timmons brings the deep soul goods on his composition “A Little Busy,” and the album closes with a fleet-footed romp through Clifford Jordan’s tune “Lost and Found.” CURTIS AMY - KATANGA Who are these guys? That’s the usual reaction of anyone fortunate enough to have come across this...
From its cover art to its incisive original songs, few records better illustrate the gulf between the promise of America and its reality than Curtis Mayfield's THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE AMERICA TODAY. The self-produced 1975 set touches on gun violence, economic woes and the struggles of life in the city, but the litany of problems is balanced by resilience and beauty, particularly on singles “So In Love” and “Love to the People.” Mayfield's haunting voice and muscular guitar work are just as impressive as his lyrics, and the Curtom collection was named one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All...

A pure vintage that features the ultimate Brazilian-boogie cult-classic ‘Estrelar’ and iconic 80s cover art that sees a gloriously sun-drenched Marcos dressed in a pink v-neck t-shirt surrounded by a generous selection of deadly-looking neon cocktails. The album was produced by the legendary Lincoln Olivetti and Marcos' brother Paulo Sérgio Valle. It showcases a real who's who of Brazilian music at the time, with stellar performances from vocalists and musicians such as Rosana, Serginho Do Trombone, Robson Jorge and Oberdan Magalhães to name but a few. This was Marcos’ second album, after having moved back...

The first ‘Spanish Moss – A Sound Portrait’ comprises the whole of side one of the vinyl and is divided, like a symphony, into four segments, two of which are superb – the foreboding yet serene ‘Quiet Before The Storm’ and the fast ‘Flash Flood’. The classic Jazz Funk of ‘Pleasant Pheasant’ starts side two in rapid and vibrant form. The lovely...
