New Sevens on Soul Brother and Expansion

China Burton – You Don’t Care About Our Love

China Burton’s 1979 Brit funk classic You Don’t Care About Our Love sees a reissue on Soul Brother Records, a rare, expensive and in demand title originally released on Logo records. There have been plenty of bootlegs of this track scattered around the marketplace for a while, but this is the first legitimate reissue that this record has seen. It is a rare piece of British disco-funk, orchestrated with a sweeping string section and fully manned brass section with rolling percussion and an anthemic, catchy chorus that make it perfect for the dancefloor. The rhythm section is primed to get people moving and enhances this a swaggering, funky track, an overlooked British rarity that has long been an in-demand record for DJs on the soul circuit. About time that this often unofficially released record saw a proper issue.

Betty Everett – Wondering / Try It, You’ll Like It

Betty Everett came from Greenwood, Mississippi. She made her recording debut in 1957 on the Cobra Records Corp label before delivery a number of classics for Vee Jay in the 60s. In the 70s she cut two albums for the Fantasy from which these two tracks composed by Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson are taken. The combination of these two tracks were first released in 1974, mostly on the lesser quality ‘styrene’, the few remaining vinyl pressings now exchanging hands for hundres of pounds. “Wondering” is a great 2-stepper which has been in demand for years. “Try It, You’ll Like It” is a lush soul ballad also in demand in its own right. Both are co-produced, arranged and conducted by David Axelrod whose orchestral mark is event throughout.
