Album Of The Day | Banda Black Rio – Maria Fumaça

Banda Black Rio’s ‘Maria Fumaca’ is one of the strongest Brazilian samba-disco-funk-soul-fusion albums of all time. As regularly played by Theo Parrish, Gilles Peterson and co. ‘Maria Fumaca’ is the groups first album, originally released by Atlantic in 1977; a record that bought the group worldwide fame. This album features in a list of the 100 greatest Brazilian albums of all time published by Rolling Stone Brazil, coming in at number 38. Banda Black Rio’s debut album  fuses Funk, Samba and Jazz in an intoxicating mix. The instrumental seven-piece outfit (3 horns, 4-piece rhythm section) excel on classics like ‘Mr Funky...

New In – Friday 18th June 2021

Classic Brit Funk band Beggar & Co have revisited some of their best loved tracks and remixed and remastered them to great effect. Jeb Loy Nichols has been bubbling along underground for a few years with some nice albums, but teaming up with Cold Diamond and Mink may well bring him to a lot more people's attention. Dunn Debrett Quintet have made a really nice deep Jazz album during lockdown featuring many great UK Players and including Nathan Haines on flute, available in limited quantities. There are some great Jazz vinyl reissues this week from Shamek Farrah & Folks, Doug...

Shamek Farrah – La Dee La La (Jazz Room Records) – Album Of The Day

Another top notch Funky Spiritual Jazz release from Paul Murphy’s Jazz Room Records. Featuring Strata-East stalwart Shamek Farrah on Saxes and an all star cast including Trumpet Legend Malachi Thompson. The music is a Funky Spiritual Afro-Latin Soul mix with the Miriam Makeba influenced Cape Township Party title track and the Jazz Soul grooves of “Waiting For Marvin” both highlights.. Get down to the Worldwide Sound with the Latin Jazz grooves of “The White Lady” featuring Sonelius Smith on Piano and “Along Came Ron Rahsaan” with Vivian Chandler singing a wordless Spiritual Jazz Headspace Lullaby. Totally obscure and his recordings...

New Tone Poets – Curtis Amy – Katanga & Art Blakey – Witch Doctor

ART BLAKEY - WITCH DOCTOR Recorded in 1961, but not released until 1967, The Witch Doctor features one of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers’ all-time great line-ups: Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. Shorter and Morgan each contribute two tunes, with Timmons penning one. Highlights include Morgan’s spectacular 6/8 modal piece “Afrique” and Shorter’s minor masterpiece “Those Who Sit And Wait.” Bobby Timmons brings the deep soul goods on his composition “A Little Busy,” and the album closes with a fleet-footed romp through Clifford Jordan’s tune “Lost and Found.”   CURTIS AMY - KATANGA Who are these guys?
