The Strata East Label was based in New York in the early to mid 70's founded by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell. It released some amazing Spiritual Jazz albums which are now very hard to find original copies of. Kamal Abdul Alim assembled a great set of musicians The Brothers for his debut and seemingly only album 'Dance'. Idris Muhammad under pins the rhythm with some great drumming. Bobby Watson on Sax and James Spaulding on Flute join Kamal in the horn section. The album was recorded in 1983 in New York but was only released in 1987. Originally released on the notorious Tiger Lily label, the album was never properly released at the time and most copies were destroyed before they could hit record store shelves. Veteran saxophonist Gary Bartz joins forces with Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Young for the sixth installment of the Jazz is Dead series. Gary is fine fettle primarily on alto throughout on this fine piece of contemporary Jazz which links the tradition with modern production featuring real instruments.
