Mainstream Disco Funk

We Want Sounds' latest compilation takes another look at Bob Shad's Mainstream Label and it's subsidiaries Brown Dog and IX Chains records that tried to harness more commercial funk, soul and disco sounds against the backdrop of the commercial failure of jazz in the seventies. This compilation takes some of the best and lesser-known recordings between 74 and 76, many of the selections reissued for the first time on vinyl. The comp opens with the instrumental and vocal versions of Grand Jury's Music Is Fun To Me, which sounds like a product of it's time, low budget disco-funk with shades...

Stratus – Girl (Motherlode Music) | Single Of The Day

This is the second release on Seb Whyte and Will Fox’s Motherlode Music label, dedicated to reissuing rare gems. This release was funded by a local dentist and promoted by ‘Cathy’, Ackley’s muse and inspiration for the release and the track ‘Girl’ in particular. Only 1000 copies were ever pressed, the majority of which were subsequently distributed by the band at shows as pseudo-business cards, with many...

Carlos Garnett – Rest In Peace

RIP to saxophonist Carlos Garnett, who passed away last night aged 84 in Panama. Garnett was born in Panama in 1938 and moved to Brooklyn NY USA in 1962, initially playing with rock and latin groups. In 1968, he was hired by Freddie Hubbard and in 1969 recorded on the album Soul Experiment. Rest In Peace – Wayne Shorter

RIP to Wayne Shorter who passed away on Thursday . One of the eternal greats of jazz who was a central force in three of the 20th Century’s most important jazz groups: Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis’ second great quintet in the late 60’s (leading into Davis’ electric period) and the globally revered Weather Report which Shorter co-founded alongside pianist Joe Zawinul in 1970. A man who redrew the boundaries of modern music and won 11 Grammy’s in so doing, his name is synonymous with high quality song writing and an ever evolving musical creativity which kept him at...
