Recommended releases of the week – 21st November 2014

New Releases, comps and reissues

There are three strong Independent Soul albums from ladies this week. Dawn Pemberton from Canada, Emma Donovan from Australia and Tobi Tobin from USA may have different styles but they all feed the Soul.  There are some interesting compilations on CDF and a couple more of the excellent value An easy introduction to…multiple album sets from Masterworks.

Vinyl releases

Great Vinyl releases this week with Barbara Lynn superb classic 60’s Soul album ‘Here is Barbara Lynn’ given a quality 180gm thick gatefold sleeve issue from Light in the Attic, and an unreleased double LP of British jazz/rock band Nucleus with Leon Thomas live at Montreux from 1970 on the Audiophile label Gearbox.  There are a few nice 45’s including some very limited Northern Soul cuts on Secret Stash, a very early Barry White track and a modern soul classic from Al Green.

James Brown film opens today

Today see the James Brown biographic film ‘Get On Up’ released in UK cinemas, it promises to be a good view on the life of the Godfather, with an excellent funky soundtrack from the man.
To Celebrate its release we have listed some of the best James Brown CD albums that we have in stock. See them here

jimmyruffinR.I.P Jimmy Ruffin

Sad to hear of the passing of Motown legend Jimmy Ruffin. ‘What becomes of the Broken Hearted’ is an all time classic and was one of the formative tracks I heard when i was getting into Soul music 45 years ago. All his great Motown recordings are on the Ultimate Motown collection.
