Seven Inch Singles from Soul Brother and Expansion

Vaneese & Carolyn – The Goodbye Song / Just A Little Smile

Vaneese & Carolyn are Vaneese Thomas (daughter of Rufus Thomas) and Carolyn Mitchell who recorded two singles together at Polydor in 1977 and 1978. From these, the 1978 collaboration has been reissued here, the sides reversed. Original copies have exchanged hands for over £300. Both singers had recorded with Disco producer John Davis and his Monster Orchestra the same year on his album “Ain’t That Enough For You”, but both these songs are more sophisticated classic soul stylings with incredible vocal performances.

Salena Jones – Am I The Same Girl / Right Now

“Am I The Same Girl” is a Eugene record/Sonny Sanders composition best known by Barbara Acklin. Equally soulful but with a jazzy twist is this now much sought after Salena Jones version only previously on a 45 out of the Netherlands (original copies have sold for over £150). Both this and equally acclaimed and sought after “Right Now” are produced by her husband Keith Mansfield featuring his orchestrations and big band sound too. “Right Now”, composed by Herbie Mann, is particularly in demand on the Mod Jazz dance scene. It will appeal to those who buy the popular Soho Scene 60s compilations, and issued here for the first time officially on 45. The track was also recorded by Mel Torme

Charles Earland – Coming To You Live (Rare 7 inch version)

Coming To You Love” is a classic and ever popular jazz funk and soul release from 1980. From its original release, the LP and 12” versions have dominated, this 7” version only recently coming to light as a different take on the track with a bonus Charles Earland organ solo. Since the realization of its existence, the previously styrene only US Columbia 7” has exchanged hands for increasingly higher amounts. Charles came from Philadelphia, played sax first with Jimmy McGriff before turning to organ in the late 60s and earning a nickname ‘The Mighty Burner’. During his time at Mercury records he scored a hit song with the disco record “Let The Music Play”, building an audience with a jazz funk and soul crowd which exists to this day through numerous other releases on Mercury and then Columbia through to his passing in 1999.

Future Flight – Hipnotic Lady / Dues

Future Flight were a five member group assembled by legendary Detroit producer in 1981. They consisted of five singers and musicians who individually and collectively worked with Lamont in the late 70s and early 80s, in particular the 1981 “Lamont” album (including “You Outta Be In Pictures”, “I Ain’t Playing” etc). The smooth sophisticated work of Lamont at that time is reflected in the one Future Flight album from which the two songs on this 7” single are taken.  A 7” single with these songs was issued at the time, albeit the reverse way around with the much sampled two-stepper “Hip-Notic Lady” becoming the most sought after. Original copies on Capitol exchange hands from between £50 and £100. Both songs are written and produced by Lamont Dozier himself.
