New releases and pre-orders 10th April 2020

Welcome to a bumper Easter mailer from Soul Brother.
Gilles Peterson has been at the forefront of the vibrant Uk Jazz scene and his Brownwood label showcases many of the amazing artists that have emerged in the last few years with a special Maida Vale live session featuring Joe Armon Jones and band, Nubya Garcia, Fatima and Ishmael Ensemble and others, available on a limited edition Double LP. Saxophonist Wayne Escoffery makes another Coltrane-esq Spiritual Jazz album ‘Humble Warrior’ which is powerful yet quite beautiful. Jazzman present the latest in their great series Spiritual Jazz 11 focusing on the Steeplechase label from Denmark which includes some great modal and deep jazz cuts.
Outta Sight have a great Modern Soul compilation LP ‘The only Way is Up’.
Expansion have two 45’s this week, great double A siders from Barrett Strong and Roy Ayers available as regular or limited edition Dj Copies.
We have back in stock some great albums and 45’s in limited quantities. ‘Groove on Down 3’ compiled by Johnny Reckless and myself is a great boogie comp and has been out of print for many years but we recently discovered a small number of 2LP sets in the warehouse, grab them whilst you can. Athens of the North made a good Disco/boogie comp ‘Disco with a feeling’ which sold out quickly but is now back in on both formats. They also discovered small quantities of six of their out of print 45’s available whilst stocks last.

As you may know the shop is now closed for walk in business to conform with the Government Covid19 regulations but we are still operating mail order services, and will do as long as we are able to. Future release dates are likely to be changeable as product supply especially from USA and Europe become harder to source due to flight restrictions.

I’d like to thank all our existing and new customers for placing orders and keeping us going through these dark times. We have introduced a new featured album of the day which you will receive each morning and give you something fresh to listen to, hopefully you will enjoy this and want to add some of the albums to your collection.

POSTAL DELAYS

We are aware that some deliveries are taking longer than usual – from what we hear this is due to a mix of Royal Mail staff shortages and industrial action. Please bear with us – these are factors that are out of our hands.

We are also running on the absolute minimum of staff so order turnaround times may also be affected for more complicated orders. Thanks for your understanding.

We are offering some classic albums on vinyl at only £14.99 each whilst stocks last and until 1st June. There is nothing like listening to a classic album to raise your spirits and help you get through these difficult times.. Marvin Gaye ‘What’s Going on’ still sounds as fresh, relevant and inspirational as it did nearly 50 years ago when he recorded it, definitely an album to listen to if you are in isolation.

R.I.P Bill Withers | tribute

Bill Withers sadly passed last Friday and Malcolm has written a fitting tribute to the great singer and songwriter who has to be regarded amongst the greatest in our music.
Thanks for all your orders most of which have been supplied but the sheer volume meant we ran out of certain Vinyl titles which are currently in transit from MOV in Holland and due just after the bank holiday, all outstanding existing orders will be fulfilled early next week. We will have stock for new orders on all titles except ‘+ Justments’ which is being repressed and will be in at the end of the month. The excellent Complete Sussex and Columbia 9CD box set will be out again in mid May and you can pre-order to secure your copy now.

Record Store Day delayed

Record Store day has been postponed until 20th June a fuller listing of the soul and jazz titles will be published nearer the time but we have two great releases the ‘Holy grail ‘Gaston ‘My Queen’ album and first official release of Bobby Moore’ Call me your anything man’ on 12″.

Radio Show

Our usual spot on Solar will be suspended for the time being as we practise responsible social distancing by not putting ourselves or others at risk, both by travelling to the studio and also being in the studio. We think that the health of ourselves and others while also protecting the NHS is important at this time. 

We are however going to continue to bring you the best weekly releases and collector’s pieces with a weekly two-hour mix that you can find on our Mixcloud. At present we don’t have the facility to record voiceovers, but hopefully you can still enjoy the music. Find the latest show here.
